Our History

In June of the year 1882, the Methodist Church inaugurated the first secondary school in Belize, then British Honduras, Wesley High School. The school began with five boys and the Rev. T.N. Roberts as Principal, in a building at the corner of Albert and South street. The school was later moved to the corner of Regent and Prince Streets and shortly thereafter (approx. 1889) to the present site at Yarborough Road.

Although circumstances led to the closure of the school for about 12 years between 1896 and 1909, the commitment of the Methodist community to education remained strong. By 1925 the enrolment stood at 26 scholars. Over the years the number of students gradually increased, and in 1950 the first female students were admitted to the school.

The school offers a four– year program which includes a common foundation course at the lower secondary level (1st and 2nd Forms) and four course options at the upper secondary level (3rd and 4th Forms). Students can choose to pursue an Academic Science, Academic Social Science, Business or Academic General Programme.

Under the guidance of an efficient staff, students can perform successfully in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams sponsored by the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) at the end of the four-year program.

On completion of their program at Wesley College, approximately 70% of the graduates go on to further studies immediately. In September 2003, the tertiary level of the school was re-opened with the resumption of a three-year Junior College/ Sixth Form Program. Wesley College is recognized in the community as one of the premier institutions in the country of Belize.

Affiliation

Wesley College is a member of the BAPSS (Belize Association of Principals of Secondary Schools) and CSSSA (Central Secondary Schools Sports Association). Wesley College works along with CSEC and ATLIB, in providing students with the opportunity to sit exams locally and internationally.

Wesley College is a Methodist institution which is governed by a Board of Management headed by the Chairman of the Board, Bishop A. Moses Benguche.

A warm welcome to Wesley College, Belize's first secondary school inaugurated in 1882. We hope that our website will provide you with an insight into the life of our prestigious school. Wesley College is committed to provide and deliver a relevant curriculum that prepares students to function effectively and efficiently in an ever-changing society. Our objective is for all students to develop their talents and realize their full potential in a conducive learning environment rooted in the teachings of John Wesley.

Wesley College is staffed by a team of dedicated and talented teachers who are supported by proud parents. We have exceedingly high expectations for our students and develop them into well-rounded individuals who are well-prepared for the other stage of their educational journey.

Wesley College 's vision is to develop a community of empowered learners in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust and where each student is valued, inspired, and challenged holistically to learn, grow and attain intellectual, social, personal, vocational, spiritual, moral and physical goals.

Wesley College's mission is that it exists to develop young men and women with active and creative minds to foster the development of productive citizens with a sense of understanding and compassion for others and the courage to act on their beliefs. We stress the total development of each child spiritual, moral, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical.

Greetings

This decade has turned out to be a rather interesting and fascinating one. Generation “z” ushered in the developing use of the computer and the rapid expansion of the computer age. Wesley College in the development of its new (webpage) has ushered in the right way to share information and to receive information. Wesley College will not be left behind in this new age of information sharing. The hope is that this medium will continue to grow.

I congratulate the institution for this initiative. It is a bold and visionary step.
